SunGrow 3-Pack Cholla Wood – Aquarium Shrimp Driftwood Decor
Product description
What’s in the pack
This set contains three pieces of cholla wood — the dried inner skeleton of the cholla cactus. Each piece has a hollow, lattice-like structure with natural holes and varying diameters so you get a trio of unique logs rather than identical sticks.
Material and dimensions
The items are raw, dried cactus husks: lightweight, porous, and slightly fibrous. Thickness and length differ between pieces, giving a realistic, varied look when arranged in a tank. Exact dimensions will vary since these are natural products, but the pieces are sized for nano to small community tanks and are suitable for shrimp, snails, and small plecos.
How it benefits aquatic pets
The porous surfaces encourage biofilm and microalgae growth, a valuable grazing resource for shrimp and snails. The hollow cores and irregular shapes create hiding places and caves for molting, resting, and shelter. Their texture is also excellent for climbing and exploring.
Preparation and placement
Because these are natural, raw husks, they should be cleaned and prepared before adding to an aquarium. Recommended steps: scrub, boil or soak in hot water (or saltwater boil if desired) to remove debris and tannins, then soak until they sink. Once waterlogged, arrange them to create caves, climbs, and visual interest. Expect slight color and shape variation across pieces — part of their natural appeal.
Care notes
Over time the wood may soften slightly as biofilm grows and some small sections can flake; this is normal with natural cholla. If sinking is slow, additional soaking or light weighting will help. Combine with other decor like coconut tunnels to increase hiding spaces and habitat complexity.
Pros
- Natural porous surface for biofilm and grazing
- Creates hiding spots and climbing areas
- Three varied pieces for realistic aquascapes
Cons
- Requires thorough boiling/soaking before use
- May release tannins initially
- Some pieces can be brittle or vary in size
VerdictA simple, natural way to enrich shrimp and small-snout fish habitats. The three dried cholla wood pieces provide climbing terrain, surfaces for biofilm growth, and crevices for shelter. They need thorough cleaning and soaking before use and may vary in size and buoyancy, but once waterlogged they become durable, attractive features that many aquarists report their shrimp quickly adopting as grazin

Good result after cleaning
I had to do a fair bit of cleaning, but after boiling and soaking one piece settled by the second day and the shrimp rushed to it within an hour. Very pleased with the outcome.

Good quality and value
Solid cholla pieces that soaked down and sank after a few days. My shrimp and assassin snails regularly hide in the hollows and seem to enjoy them.

Shrimp went wild
The moment I placed them in the tank my shrimp swarmed the wood. They climb and cling to each piece — the size fits my shrimp perfectly.

Loved for biofilm, a bit fragile
The neocaridina were all over the biofilm, but a small section crumbled underwater. One log was too narrow for a proper hiding spot.

Instant enrichment for my shrimp
My shrimp stopped hiding and started exploring all over these pieces. Prep was straightforward — boil and scrub, then soak until they sink. They feel like authentic wood and provide a reliable grazing surface; my colony is doing much better.

Clean arrival and attractive
I followed the cleaning steps and found them clean and attractive. One piece is partially submerged so I’m waiting a little longer for it to fully sink. I plugged the end hole to prevent tiny fish from entering.

Great decorative and functional pieces
After boiling and scrubbing the wood revealed a lovely color. They sank in about three days and worked well across two tanks. Durable enough for regular use and really improved the look of my setups.

Good product but heavy prep needed
The chunks arrived dirty; I ended up boiling and soaking multiple times and gave them a hard scrub with a brush. After that they were excellent — sturdy, nicely sized pieces.

Reordered after success
We bought another set because the shrimp adore it. Initially soak in a separate container to get them to sink, but once submerged they’re fantastic. My shrimp have even nibbled the lighter spots.

Looks lovely and shrimp-approved
It looks great in the aquarium and my shrimp love it. It arrived slightly dirty so I boiled and cleaned it before adding; otherwise all good.

Shrimp magnet
I boiled and soaked to reduce tannin release; two sank on their own and the third needed a little weight. Within minutes most of the shrimp were on the wood and even some corydoras inspected it. Very popular with the livestock.
