Fluval Plant & Shrimp Aquarium Stratum — 8.8 lb Substrate
Product description
Formulated for freshwater planted aquariums and shrimp tanks, this substrate is composed of lightweight, porous granules that encourage plant roots to penetrate and spread. One 8.8 lb bag is included per unit. The texture is intentionally non-compacting to maintain oxygen flow around roots and to provide abundant surface area for nitrifying bacteria to colonize, supporting biological filtration.
The material helps sustain a neutral to slightly acidic pH range that suits most aquatic plants, tropical fish, and freshwater shrimp. It won’t discolor the aquarium water and helps limit organic staining often associated with natural driftwood. For optimal plant nutrition, users often pair this substrate with complementary micronutrient supplements to ensure a full spectrum of macro- and micronutrients.
Available in multiple sizes to match tank needs — commonly found in 4.4 lb, 8.8 lb, and 17.6 lb bags — the substrate can be used alone or layered under decorative sands or gravels for visual effect and depth. It provides a safe refuge for juvenile shrimp and creates a stable base for rooted plants to establish dense root systems.
Pros
- Porous, non-compacting granules encourage healthy root growth
- Supports colonization of beneficial nitrifying bacteria
- Maintains neutral to slightly acidic water chemistry suitable for plants and shrimp
Cons
- Can produce surface dust or tint if disturbed during filling
- May require nutrient supplementation over long-term use
- Some setups need careful handling when pouring to avoid cloudiness
VerdictA lightweight, porous soil designed for planted freshwater aquariums and shrimp setups. It promotes root penetration and provides a large surface area for beneficial bacteria, while supporting a neutral to mildly acidic water chemistry favored by many plants, tropical fish, and shrimp. It’s attractive, won’t tint water, and is available in multiple bag sizes to suit different tank projects.

Transformed my planted tanks — layering method explained
After switching to this in my later tanks I replaced most of my older substrates because the improvement was so obvious. I place this layer first, then add a coarser blasting sand for depth and a thin top layer of shimmering aquarium sand for looks. Plants root heavily and grow vigorously. For tissue-culture plants, many hobbyists acclimatize them using a mix of mostly perlite with a small portion of this substrate.

Reliable substrate for shrimp and plants
I’ve used this several times and keep coming back. For my planted shrimp tanks it’s been excellent: plants grow fast, roots anchor quickly, and water stays clear after initial rinsing. Shrimp do very well on it. The feel is pleasant and it doesn’t compact. It’s a bit pricier than some options but the quality shows.

Plants thrive, looks natural — installation tips included
My plants took to this substrate immediately; it looks natural, doesn’t smell, and fish are fine with it. Water stayed clear after setup. Installation can be fiddly — I lightly rinsed once, poured it in, covered the substrate, and filled slowly. Agitate the surface gently to remove fine bits, drain the brown water, cover again and finish filling; a day of filtration cleared the remaining cloudiness. Avoid splashing brown residue onto leaves to reduce algae risk.

Dark color makes foliage stand out
The black substrate really makes plants pop and offers the nutrients they need to grow. It settles overnight but can tint the water if disturbed a lot. I found it at a very competitive cost and liked how it improved the tank’s appearance.

Works well and helped prevent plant rot
Has worked well for me — helped limit plant rot and didn’t look bad even without extensive rinsing. Not too dusty and definitely recommend it.

Solid choice for a 10-gallon planted setup
After seeing many recommendations I used this in my 10-gallon and my plants responded well. It looks good in the tank and the plants adjusted quickly. I’m pleased with the results and would pick it again for a small planted aquarium.

Promotes solid early growth, supplement later
This substrate gave my starter plants a strong foundation and they rooted quickly, giving the tank a healthy, natural look. It performs best during the initial months when substrate nutrients are plentiful; after a while those nutrients diminish, so I use root tabs or other supplements to sustain growth long term.

Affordable quality that upgrades the aquascape
This substrate instantly improved my aquarium’s natural riverbed look and was straightforward to rinse and install. Plant health improved and fish seemed more at ease. The texture is comfortable to work with — not too sharp or fine — and it spread evenly for easy aquascaping. Overall very satisfied.

Excellent planting medium — skip the pre-rinse
It looks great and plants love it. The granules hold together if you don’t crush them, and shrimp and fish do fine on it. Big tip: block or slow the water flow when filling the tank to avoid disturbing the soil. Despite recommendations to rinse, I found skipping a full pre-rinse reduced mess; add water carefully and the filter clears things up quickly.

Doesn’t cloud water if filled slowly
Covered with gravel it did not cloud the water. Pour water in slowly. I’ll watch how plant growth develops over time.

Better plant growth than plain sand
I switched from regular sand after a year when plant growth slowed. Plants are healthier now though not dramatically different. One 8.8 lb bag is too much for my nano tank; I still have about half left.
