Tabletop Amish-Style Wooden Yarn Swift
Product description
This tabletop Amish-style yarn swift is crafted from solid hardwood, hand-sanded to a very smooth finish without heavy varnishes so there are no strong fumes to worry about. The kit includes the base with four legs, removable arms, a set of adjustable wooden pegs for sizing, and four non-slip pads on the base to keep it steady on a work surface.
The arms accept pegs that can be positioned to hold skeins spanning roughly 2½ to 6 feet in circumference. Assembly is tool-free: the pieces slide and stack together, held in place by simple dowels, and it can be taken apart in seconds for flat storage or transport. In use it rotates with minimal friction, allowing yarn to be wound quickly into cakes or cones without snagging. The minimal hardware and solid joints mean there are few failure points, and its compact form once disassembled makes it easy to tuck away between projects.
Pros
- Smooth, snag-free wood finish
- Adjustable for many hank sizes
- Quick to assemble and store
Cons
- Can feel a bit wobbly on uneven surfaces
- Requires careful peg placement during fast winding
- Tabletop models may move with very large skeins
VerdictA reliable, low-tech yarn swift that favors simplicity and smooth operation. Its solid-wood construction and extra-fine sanding protect delicate fibers, the adjustable dowel pegs handle a wide range of hank sizes, and the quick assembly and compact disassembly make it convenient for crafters with limited space.

Works beautifully with slippery fibers
I used this swift on lace-weight viscose and it performed well. At first it seemed a little loose, but once the yarn was on and under tension it spun evenly and didn’t catch. Paired with a metal winder, it produced nicely-formed cakes that weren’t over-tightened.

Very smooth operation
Set-up was quick and it pairs well with a ball winder. The wood is nicely finished and the whole unit turns without catching.

Made winding multiple hanks painless
Long-time knitter here — I finally bought a swift when I needed to process several hanks at once. This wooden tabletop model assembled in minutes and held six skeins without snagging. Winding that would have taken hours by hand became a quick, even task. Worth the switch for anyone who buys hand-dyed or multiple hanks.

Simple, adaptable and fun to use
I liked how straightforward the design is and how easy it is to alter for different skein lengths. It’s light and takes up little space; I may add a clamp for very large hanks, but otherwise it’s a pleasure to use.

Ingeniously simple and reliable
No clamps or complicated parts to manage. This unit stayed steady during use and didn’t damage my table. I tried an umbrella-style swift first and ended up preferring this model.

Handcrafted and dependable
Nicely made wooden swift that assembles and dismantles with ease. Ideal for smaller workspaces and regular winding tasks.

Does the job but can wobble
It winds skeins into balls, though I noticed some wobble where the legs overlap. That joint can rock if nudged, and repositioning the yarn winder sometimes shifts strands off pegs, which leads to tangles. Still, it completes the task with care.

Great results, watch the pegs
I used this with a separate metal ball winder and it produced two very nice cakes — one long lace yarn and one worsted weight. My only hiccup: a peg popped out during faster winding, so make sure each peg is seated firmly before you crank.

Thirty seconds to set up
Pieces slide together quickly and it collapses flat to store. The pegs allow fine adjustments for skein size, and it works very well with a metal ball winder — no more winding on chair backs.

Simple design that holds up
I bought this because I wanted a no-frills solution that wouldn’t break or tangle. It’s straightforward to set up and take down, and there aren’t many small parts to lose or damage. It’s solid enough for daily use in my craft space and stores away flat when I’m done.

Saved my hands — great gift idea
I bought this so my partner wouldn't need help holding hanks while winding. It freed up both my arms and made center-pull balls easy to create. She now uses it regularly when spinning and preparing yarn, and it’s made evenings less of a two-person job.
