Pre-Rooted Hardy Water Lily Rhizome Bundle — 4-Color Pack
Product description
What you receive: Four pre-rooted hardy water lily rhizomes (tubers) in four colors: purple, red, yellow and orange. These arrive as developing rhizomes, not mature plants with pads and flowers, and must be planted in pots or containers to complete their growth cycle.
Source and quality: The plants come from growers recognized by the International Waterlily & Water Gardening Society. They are cultivated in digitally controlled nurseries to minimize pests, snails, algae and disease before shipment.
Planting and care: Place each tuber in a container filled with heavy aquatic soil, angling the rhizome at roughly 45 degrees with the non-growing end toward the pot’s rim and the crown facing the center. Press soil gently around the roots but do not bury the crown. Use fertilizer tablets or water-lily feed regularly — these are heavy feeders and respond well to routine feeding.
Water and placement: Position pots so the crown sits at about 6 to 12 inches of water depth. Choose still-water locations and avoid direct flow from waterfalls or fountains, which can hinder development. In autumn, trim back foliage after growth slows and let the plants remain at the bottom of the water garden through winter.
Pros
- Pre-rooted tubers simplify initial planting
- Four distinct color varieties included

VerdictThis 4-color pack offers an easy entry to growing hardy water lilies: pre-rooted tubers cut down on setup time and are sourced from IWGS award growers. Expect mixed germination — several buyers report strong growth while others had failures or shipping damage. Follow planting directions and fertilize for best results.

Start in a starter tub — then transplant
Received four small pale tubers and started them in an 18" deep tub with mud. At six weeks all had several pads and long roots. I then moved them to my 18" deep koi pond and they reached the surface the next day. Excited to see how they mature and whether they overwinter here.

Only one established reliably
Followed planting instructions and used proper pond soil and fertilizer, but only one of four rooted and grew into a lovely flowering plant. The other three never took off and eventually died despite careful care.

Mixed results — missing colors
Purchased this twice and each shipment produced only three healthy plants. The survivors flowered within eight weeks and the yellow and pink tones were attractive, but the expected white and purple never appeared. Tubers seem small and can fail, though those that establish grow rapidly.

Good growth but unlabeled tubers
Plants are growing well and I’m pleased overall. My main gripe is the lack of labeling — all four arrived together so I couldn’t pot them by color. Growth rates differ; one is slow and may have been disturbed by koi. Others have multiple pads and are progressing nicely.

Arrived unlabeled and deteriorated
These arrived as bare tubers with no clear instructions and the shipping box lacked any live-plant notice. The tubers deteriorated and I couldn’t get help from the seller. Unfortunately they all died immediately.

Helpful seller and replacement sent
Ordered in early spring; three of four showed healthy sprouts quickly while one failed to develop. After contacting the seller I was advised to wait; a replacement was sent and is now growing well. Several rhizomes showed minor bud damage from shipping, which could have affected one of the originals. Overall a positive experience so far — waiting to see the blooms.
