TropiClean 16 oz Dog & Cat Detangler Spray — Dematting Leave-In Conditioner
Product description
TropiClean Detangler Spray is a 16 oz leave-in conditioner designed for both dogs and cats, intended to soften tangles, loosen knots and aid in dematting.
The formula is derived from botanical ingredients and built to moisturize the coat so hair moves more freely. The lightweight blend leaves fur feeling silky without a heavy, greasy residue and carries a mild, refreshing fragrance.
This spray is suitable for all fur types — from fine and wavy to thick and easily matted coats — and is frequently used on areas that trap knots such as ears, tail feathering and leg “skirts.” Application is simple: spray on the tangled area, gently work the product into the hair, let it sit briefly, then tease or comb out the loosened fibers.
Made in the USA, the product pairs well with complementary grooming shampoos in TropiClean’s line, including their coconut-scented shed-control and 2-in-1 formulas. It’s supplied in a trigger-spray bottle for controlled application and portability.
Pros
- Eases brushing and helps release mats
- Moisturizing botanical formula that isn’t greasy
- Light, pleasant scent and simple spray application
Cons
- Not an instant cure for very tight mats
- May require repeated applications for deep tangles
- Heavy users may go through a bottle quickly
VerdictA reliable leave-in detangler that softens knots and makes brushing less stressful. It’s gentle, lightly scented and works across a wide range of coat types, though very severe mats still take time and care to remove.

Great for a thick-coated Samoyed
After six months of routine use I’m impressed. My Samoyed grows a dense winter coat and tends to mat around the ears and feathering. A few sprays let the product penetrate so I can usually pull tangles apart by hand, and brushing the hind leg skirts and tail is far easier. The trigger spray is convenient and the fur stays soft and well-kept between brushings.

One squirt usually does the trick
Simple and effective — I can tackle a mat with a single controlled spray and it loosens quickly enough to comb out.

Wonderful spray. My Maltese tolerates it well and it makes combing much easier.

Pleasant scent and handy trigger bottle
I like the mild fragrance and the trigger spray design — it’s easy to apply and not overpowering. I’m ready to buy another bottle.

Rescued my long-haired cat from a stubborn back mat
I discovered a hard, two-finger-wide mat on my long-haired cat and was worried about trimming too close to her skin. I soaked the area generously and massaged the spray in for a few days, trimming only small outer pieces as the knot softened. After repeating the soak and gentle work over several sessions the mat finally came out. Her coat wasn’t oily, the scent was mild, and she showed no signs of irritation. A strong caution: be very careful when cutting mats near skin — work slowly and keep the pet calm.

Light scent, not greasy — just watch slippery floors
The scent is light and it doesn’t leave a greasy feel on the coat. Great for regular comb-outs or on damp fur after a bath. Note: avoid spraying on tile or smooth floors because it can make them slippery.

Softened severe mats on my Maine Coon
My Maine Coon developed deep mats down to the skin while I was ill. I sprayed the mats thoroughly, worked the product down to the base and blotted the excess, then let it sit briefly. That softened the knots so I could carefully tease out hairs and slide a small comb between skin and fur to trim safely. It was slow and required patience, but the spray made removal possible without a full clipper session.

Trainer recommended — works well on fine, long hair
Recommended by our trainer and it’s been a great option. It helps with the small knots my long-haired dog gets; spray, wait a couple minutes and the tangles loosen. Smells nice and is easy to use.

Makes knot removal far easier for my Maltipoo
My Maltipoo gets tangles on his ears and tail quickly. I saturate the mats, gently pull the hair apart into a loose tangle, then comb from the outside in. The spray lets the hair separate so the comb can work without snagging; I then pick out remaining bits with my fingers and comb again. It’s a fair bit of effort, but this product makes the whole process doable.

Helps keep my Shih Tzu tangle-free
My Shih Tzu gets tangled often from playing. This spray helps me remove those knots and keeps his coat manageable. Highly useful for breeds like Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso.

Solid detangler; I still prefer an organic spa line
I use this on my Yorkenese and it conditions, detangles and helps remove mats exactly as advertised, with a light pleasant fragrance. I recommend it, though I personally favor an organic Italian grooming line I’ve tried that suits my preferences better; that line can be harder to find. Still, this TropiClean spray is effective and dependable.
