Siterwell 10-Year Photoelectric Smoke Detector
Product description
Activation and power
The alarm ships with a pull tab that isolates the internal battery. You must remove that tab to activate the unit before installing it. The power source is an integrated 3V lithium cell designed to operate for the advertised 10-year service life; when the unit emits a low-battery or fault alert the manufacturer recommends replacing the entire alarm rather than attempting battery replacement.
Detection technology and approvals
This model uses a photoelectric sensor and is listed to UL217 (10th edition) testing criteria. Photoelectric detection is tuned to be sensitive to slow, smoldering fires that produce smoke with little heat and can develop over an extended period before flaming. A visible/audible alarm is activated on detection; the design aims to remain quiet when not responding to hazards.
Controls and recommended maintenance
A dedicated test/mute button lets you verify normal operation and silence nuisance alarms temporarily. The maker advises weekly testing via that button to ensure continued function. If the unit signals a fault condition, the alarm should be removed from service and replaced promptly.
Mounting and what's included
Each package includes both a magnetic (3M-style) disc and screws so you can choose a tool-free magnetic mounting or a more permanent screw installation on a ceiling or wall. The alarm has a low-profile housing intended to fit over standard junction boxes or directly on flat surfaces, making it suitable for kitchens, hallways, bedrooms and other household locations.
Practical notes
The alarm is intended as a standalone, sealed device with no user-replaceable battery. It’s designed for indoor ambient conditions; check the specified operating range for locations such as unconditioned attics or garages. Installation is straightforward whether you prefer adhesive/magnetic mounting or a screw-secured base.

- Photoelectric sensor for smoldering smoke detection
- Includes magnetic disc and screws for flexible mounting
Cons

- May produce false alarms in certain environments
- Screw base may require drilling to install securely
VerdictThis Siterwell photoelectric alarm is a straightforward, low-maintenance option for detecting slow, smoldering fires thanks to its UL217-listed sensor and 10-year sealed lithium power source. Installation is flexible — magnets or screws — and the prominent test/mute control makes checks and temporary silences simple. However, some users report false alarms in certain conditions and the stated oper

Neat look and quick retrofit
Replaced old discolored detectors and capped the wiring, covering junction boxes with matching plates. Adhered these alarms to the faceplates and installed five in about 30 minutes — much faster than patching and texturing walls. They look clean and the peace of mind is worth the cost.

Two mounting methods work well
The product includes both screws and 3M-style tape so you can choose a permanent or adhesive installation. Straightforward and convenient.

Unreliable in my experience; narrow temp range
Bought a four-pack that I left unused for months, and when I checked them they proved unreliable. The stated 0–40°C operating range is too restrictive for some areas like attics. One unit even tripped the day it was installed in a kitchenette. I’ll be discarding these units.

Solid build and useful mounting options
Well-made unit with handy double-sided tape and magnet disc that can avoid screwing into surfaces. Features are strong for the price and I’ll buy replacements when needed.

Easy to set up and operate
Large test/mute button makes weekly checks and silencing straightforward. The magnetic mount snaps on easily and the sealed battery is supposed to last a decade. Good value overall.

Requires some prep for screw mounting
Nice detectors but the metal base plate has no predrilled holes. To mount with a screw you need to drill through the steel plate first, so count on 10–15 minutes per unit for that process.
