Saltwater
Chaetomorpha Spiralis (Chaeto) Macroalgae — 5g Saltwater Portion
Product description
What you receive: a 5 gram portion of live Chaetomorpha Spiralis (often called Chaeto) intended for use in saltwater aquaria.
Cultivation and condition: the macroalgae is grown under controlled conditions to reduce pests and obvious contaminants. The product is offered live so it can begin nutrient uptake shortly after placement.
Materials and function: Chaetomorpha is a filamentous green macroalga that efficiently absorbs dissolved nitrates and phosphates, making it a natural option for nutrient export in sumps, refugia, or display tanks.
Care and use: this strain is noted for its robust nature and tolerates a wide range of water parameters, making it suitable for beginners and hobbyists with limited maintenance time. It typically performs well under a modest grow light and gentle water flow.
Compatibility: Chaeto is non-toxic and considered safe to keep around fish, invertebrates, and many coral species; it may be trimmed or bundled to fit into refugium baskets or left loose in a sump.
Aesthetics: beyond its utility, the algae’s tangled, wiry masses can add a natural, green element to your system while serving a biological function.
Pros
- Removes nitrates and phosphates naturally
- Hardy, low-maintenance macroalgae
- Safe for fish, inverts, and many corals
Cons
- Small 5 g portion may not suit large systems
- Can carry filamentous hitchhikers if present
- May require trimming or repositioning over time
VerdictThis 5 g Chaetomorpha Spiralis offering is a convenient way to introduce macroalgae for nutrient control and visual texture in a saltwater setup. It’s hardy and low-maintenance, safe for fish, invertebrates, and corals, but buyers should inspect it on arrival for hitchhiking filamentous algae which can compete if present.

Arrived tangled with filamentous algae
Half of it arrived tangled with hair algae. After I put it in the sump under a grow light, the filamentous algae became more dominant than the Chaeto.
