Adjustable Auto‑Clamp Oil Filter Wrench — Universal 1/2" Drive
Product description
This adjustable oil filter wrench is intended to remove and install oil filters sized between 2.36 and 3.15 inches (60–80 mm).
It uses a standard 1/2 inch drive so you can attach a ratchet, breaker bar, or torque wrench; the tool is rated to withstand torques up to 120 Nm.
Constructed from durable 40# carbon steel, the wrench is built for repeated shop use and resists deformation under load. The design includes two specially formed teeth on the contact edges to improve grip and reduce slipping on oily end caps.
A spring‑assisted auto‑clamp mechanism lets the claws adapt to the filter diameter automatically: as you start turning, the claws bite in tighter based on the filter size, making it useful for filters tucked into tight or awkward locations on many vehicles.
Pros
- Works with common 1/2" drives
- Auto‑adjusting claws for different diameters
- Durable 40# carbon steel construction
Cons
- No written setup instructions included
- Can be fiddly in very tight spaces
- Initial setup may require practice
VerdictA robust, adjustable wrench for removing and installing many cartridge and spin‑on oil filters in confined engine bays. The 1/2" drive accepts standard ratchets and torque tools and the self‑acting claws adapt to the filter diameter, giving a reliable bite when set correctly. It can handle up to 120 Nm and the hardened teeth improve purchase on oily surfaces. Novices may need a minute to set the d

Worked after I learned the setup
No manual came with it so I had to experiment. At first the jaws would slip and the tool seemed to loosen as I turned. After reorienting and turning counter‑clockwise the wrench locked onto the filter and removed it easily. Used it on a 2006 CRV 2.4L — this was the third style of remover I tried and it ultimately made the task simple. Would have appreciated basic illustrated instructions.

Saved a lot of disassembly
I needed to change a transmission filter on a backhoe with almost no clearance. This slipped a touch at first but then bit firmly and the filter came off, likely preventing days of dismantling the machine.

Change the direction before removing
Several comments warned the wrench may be set to tighten out of the box. Pull the mechanism to its travel limit to flip the cam into removal mode. The maker should add a short how‑to, but once switched it works very well.

A bit complex for tight work
It can be awkward to position vertically and hold flat while engaging the take‑up in cramped spaces. Once it bites it turns the filter, but a simpler thin‑cup remover would have been easier to fit in my application.
