8 oz Pure Tung Oil for Wood Finishing (Food-Grade)
Product description
This product is supplied as a single 8 oz bottle of 100% natural tung oil, with no added solvents, pigments, or synthetic thickeners. The oil is derived from the seeds of tung trees grown in East Asia and is presented as a food-grade, non-toxic finish suitable for surfaces that touch food.
The oil has been heat-treated (boiled) to accelerate drying compared with completely raw tung oil. Once applied, it forms a protective film that sheds water and offers resistance to ultraviolet exposure. Because it penetrates the wood rather than sitting solely on the surface, it does not remain tacky when properly cured.
Tung oil is a penetrating finish that nourishes and brings out the natural color and figure of many wood species. It slightly deepens tone — often similar to the wet-wood look — and adds a subtle sheen that can be built with multiple coats.
Application is simple: brush or wipe on a thin coat, allow the oil to warm and cure at room temperature, wipe off excess, and repeat as needed. Multiple light coats produce the best, long-lasting protection and luster. Drying times will vary with temperature and coat thickness.
Suitable uses include cutting boards, wooden tableware, floors, garden furniture, planters, and other wood items where a food-safe or natural finish is desired. Important safety note: the oil is intended for treating food-contact surfaces but is not for ingestion—do not consume and keep out of reach of children.
Pros
- 100% pure, food-grade tung oil
- Penetrates and enhances wood grain
- Heat-treated for faster drying
Cons
- Takes time to fully cure between coats
- May darken lighter woods noticeably
- Strong natural odor until it airs out
VerdictA straightforward, additive-free tung oil that soaks into wood, enhances grain, and creates a durable, water-repellent finish. Dries faster than raw oils thanks to heat treatment, but still requires patience between coats. Good choice for food-contact pieces and outdoor wood when you want a natural, non-toxic finish.

Penetrates well on knife handles
Good oil for knife scales — soaked in nicely and only slightly darkened holly.

Pricey but authentic
More expensive than blends, but it's genuine tung oil, not a cheap mixture.

Low smell and great floor results
Worried about fumes in my older home, but the scent was mild and faded fast. Brushed on and the floor looks much richer, though darker than before.

Works well with citrus thinner
Mixed 1:1 with citrus solvent, it goes on smoothly and looks far superior to just staining.

Waterproof after a few coats
Two coats made water bead and roll off. Slight deepening of color and a pleasant gloss. Non-toxic finish for my garden beds.

Nice finish but slow cure
Leaves a very attractive surface. Keep in mind tung oil can take a long time to fully dry and cure.

Experienced woodworker approval
Pure, rich tung oil that smells fresh. I thin it for easier spread and get excellent coverage on hard maple.

Good alternative to wax
Thicker than other food-safe finishes I've used, but covers well and feels like beeswax without the mess. No odor and cleanup is simple.

Better penetration than linseed
I mill my own cedar and tried this against linseed and poly. It soaks in deeper and leaves a clear, flat finish — topcoats available for shine.
