Ebony-Handled Diamond Stitching Awl — Leather Sewing Tool, 3mm
Product description
Materials and build: The tool features a hardened high-carbon steel (55) needle in a diamond profile, set into an ebony blackwood handle with a brass ferrule. The blade is permanently fixed in the handle and designed to create tapered diamond holes ideal for saddle stitching.
Included: One stitching awl (1 pc) per purchase. The kit does not include punches, thread, or other accessories — this awl is intended to accompany your existing leatherworking setup.
Sizes and shapes: Diamond-shape awls come in three sizes — S, M, and L — to correspond roughly to 3mm, 4mm, and 5mm chisel widths. There is also a circular-shaft option with a 2.0mm diameter for finer work.
How to use: For best results, pre-punch holes with an appropriate hole punch and use the awl to help shape and enlarge the opening as you saddle-stitch. The awl is an assisting tool rather than a replacement for a proper punch when working dense leather.
Care and maintenance: The needles arrive sharp; they can be resharpened and honed as needed. Because the steel is keen, avoid excessive lateral force which can stress the tip. Keep out of reach of children.
Warnings and fit: The handle offers a solid ergonomic grip for many hand sizes, but take care when working heavy, multi-layer projects. Some users prefer using a backing cork or block when puncturing several layers to protect the tip and their hands.
Pros
- Comfortable ebony wood grip with brass ferrule
- Sharp, easy-to-hone diamond-point blade
- Multiple sizes to match common chisel widths
Cons
- Tip can be brittle under lateral pressure
- Ferrule or escutcheon may loosen or twist
- Occasional glue failure on the handle
VerdictThis ebony-handled diamond awl delivers a comfortable grip and a keen point that makes hand stitching leather straightforward. It comes as a single tool crafted from high-carbon steel with a brass ferrule and hardwood handle; sizes fit common chisel widths. It’s great for producing clean diamond-shaped stitch holes and is easy to sharpen, but some users report tip fragility and occasional loosenin

Effective piercing but fragile
Cuts leather very well, but the tip is brittle — two awls snapped under side pressure while working 9–10 oz leather.

Clean, sharp and holds an edge
Made a leather bag and ran over 1,000 stitches without issue. I did a mid-project hone, and the point sharpened up easily.

Comfortable shape, needs more temper
Handle length and shape suit small to medium hands and it makes neat diamond holes. On medium veg-tan I had to sharpen after 40–50 stitches; the flats are too small to stop rolling.

Pro feel for everyday use
Big step up from basic awls after an initial sharpening. Cuts through glued stitch lines cleanly; I use a cork backing for multi-layer 10 oz work.

All three snapped — disappointing
All three tips in my set fractured; the metal felt cheap. Would avoid buying this set.

Not durable enough for the cost
Blades should be better tempered. One broke at the bezel after 15–20 holes while only piercing the last layer; bezels can come loose.

Pleasant surprise — very capable
Was skeptical at first but it performs like pricier tools. Still testing long-term, but initial results are excellent.

Nicely packed, minor collar issue
Small size arrived well packaged and reasonably sharp. The handle is slimmer than expected and the metal collar twisted easily — I’ll reglue it.

Good set with small markings
I bought the three-size set (S, M, L). They’re very sharp and handled multiple layers fine. The size marks on the collars are nearly invisible.

Looked great but unglued quickly
Attractive out of the box, but the handle came unglued after only a few uses.
