Digitrax Zephyr Express DCC Starter Set (ZEPE) with Power Supply
Product description
The Zephyr Express ZEPE starter set centers on the Zephyr Express command station and comes as a small kit intended to get a DCC layout running quickly. The package typically includes the ZEPE command station module, at least one handheld throttle for direct control, a matching external power supply/transformer with cable, and the leads needed to connect to track terminals.
The command station and throttle housings are molded plastic with metal connectors and internal electronics on printed circuit boards. The chassis sizes are compact — the command station is palm-sized to sit beside a small layout bench, and the handheld throttle is similarly small and designed for one-handed operation.
To use the set you connect the power supply to the command station, run the track output leads to your rails, and pair or plug in the throttle. The system supports running multiple locomotives, speed steps, direction, lights and sound-equipped decoders (where supported by the locomotive), and programming of mobile decoders via on-track programming. Note: accessory (stationary) decoder CV programming is not fully supported by the unit itself and may require a different command station or programmer for that specific function.
Pros
- Compact, easy to set up for small layouts
- Supports multiple locomotives and on-track mobile decoder programming
- Handheld throttle is simple and ergonomic
Cons
- Doesn't offer accessory decoder CV programming
- Limited expansion for very large layouts
- Documentation may require careful reading for advanced features
VerdictThe Zephyr Express ZEPE starter set is a compact, user-friendly entry into DCC operation. It delivers straightforward setup, reliable control of multiple locomotives, and on-track programming for mobile decoders. It’s well suited for small N or HO layouts and hobbyists learning DCC, though accessory decoder CV programming is limited and may require another tool if you need that function.

Very good first DCC system
Setting up this for my first DCC HO layout went smoothly. It performs well and is fairly simple to learn.

Solid controller for learning DCC
I built a little 3x6 N layout using older locos and this controller. After brushing up on DCC basics I found it a capable, powerful option for beginners. The learning curve is real, but persistence pays off. I can only compare it to other equipment I haven’t personally used, and my experience has been positive so far.

Highly regarded by reviewers
I saw many positive write-ups comparing this to other controllers and it consistently scored highly. I'll be using it for seasonal layouts and special locos I keep on display.

Ready for testing converted locos
Bought to test N scale locos converted from DC to DCC. It does the job, is easy to set up, and came packaged well. Recommended for those starting in the hobby.

Easy to use but misses one feature
Mostly improved usability for DCC. However, it lacks CV programming for accessory (stationary) decoders; mobile CV programming is supported. If you need accessory CVs you'll need another programmer.
